ASHRAE Standard 241
Compliant Air for Commercial Spaces
Industry standards for indoor air quality are set forth by ASHRAE and have recently undergone significant changes in light of new research into how airborne pathogens and diseases spread in indoor commercial spaces.
The new ASHRAE Standard 241 introduces precise targets for equivalent clean airflow rates, which many commercial buildings were not initially designed to meet. Compared to the previous standard, ASHRAE 62.1, the rates in ASHRAE Standard 241 are up to 10 times higher. This stark difference emphasizes the insufficiency of current ventilation standards in the face of airborne disease threats.
Refer to the table below for Minimum Ventilation Rates in the Breathing Zone, which includes existing ventilation systems and air cleaning devices, for normal operation (62.1) and Infectious Risk Management Mode (241) for each commercial occupiable space.
